Definition

The word 'Laser' is actually an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation" . The principle behind light emission in a laser rests on a quantum property of atoms which was first discovered by Einstein in 1915. Various complex equations of physics are used to derive the actual laser machine. In simple terms, laser radiation is emitted when a crystal of some substance is stimulated by electrical or other energy. The type of radiation that is emitted depends on the crystal which is used in the laser. The radiation can be visible light, frequencies above visible light like ultraviolet and frequencies below visible light like infra red and microwave. The most important characteristic of laser light is that it is coherent. Spatial coherence means that the light is emitted in a very focused manner, in a tight beam or a narrow point of light, and this beam can continue for very long distances without getting spread out. Temporal coherence means that it can emit light within a very narrow spectrum, ie, it can emit light of a single wavelength only, which is not possible with other sources of light. Also, the light emitted can have a high power by increasing the energy of stimulation. These characteristics makes the laser a very useful source of light and lasers are now used in a host of applications, from measuring to cutting to household electrical equipments like CDs and DVDs. It is also used in a wide variety of medical procedures. Various types of lasers are used in medical procedures, some of them are ruby, alexandrite, Nd-Yag, CO2, and Diode lasers. They all differ mainly in the substance used as the emitting substance at the core and their functions differ accordingly as they emit light of differing wavelengths and energy. Diode lasers use a combination of two semi-conducting materials, such as Gallium arsenide, indium phosphide, gallium antimonide, and gallium nitride. Different combinations will produce light of different wavelengths. Usually a combination of two such semi-conducting materials is used, such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) with aluminium gallium arsenide (AlxGa(1-x)As). These combinations are more efficient than a single semi conducting substance. The Ruby, Alexandrite, Nd-Yag, and Diode lasers are used in hair removal. The Diode lasers can used in our clinic emits light at 810 nm which is the optimum for hair removal. For extra power, an array of laser emitting diodes are used. Eight, ten or twelve diodes are used in lasers for hair removal. A 10 layer array is used in our clinic which is optimum for Indian skin.
